The philosophy of the middle school world language department is to help students acquire language for long-term proficiency. In order to help the students become more proficient in their world language, students are engaged with constant opportunities to listen to and read things in the target language that are interesting, engaging, and comprehensible to them. Teachers provide feedback to students primarily in regard to their listening and reading comprehension and eventually give students opportunities to demonstrate their ability to produce language by speaking and writing.
WL Course Offerings at AMS (Grades 5-8)
At the middle school, 5th-grade students take an Exploring World Language Class one quarter of the year, where they have the opportunity to experience all three modern languages offered at AMS: French, Italian, and Spanish. At the end of 6th grade, students sign up for one of the three world languages and then take the equivalent of a high school level 1 course over 7th and 8th grade.
WL Course Offerings at AHS (Grades 9-12)
At the high school, we offer a wide range of WL courses starting at level 2R and continuing on through Level 5/College and Advanced Placement (AP) courses in all three modern languages, as well as Honors Latin 1, 2 & AP. Every year at the HS, there is also a level 1 course that is taught in ONE of the three modern languages for students who enter Ardsley in 9th grade or later.
