• First graders are discovering the power of their words through our personal narrative writing unit. They have realized that written stories begin with spoken words through the study of oral storytelling. Initially, the children orally told stories in sequential order, and then they moved to writing them on paper.

The purpose of teaching personal narratives is to give students the opportunity to write about a moment in their lives. Students have learned the features of a personal narrative which includes important details such as who, where, and what. The narrative is also written sequentially with a beginning, middle, and end.

Please continue to talk at home about stories that have happened in your child’s life. This will help to create new topics to write about in school. Be sure to have your child tell the stories in order and include details.
