First graders will have opportunities this year to publish a variety of writing pieces including fiction and nonfiction.

Our writing workshop consists of selecting and growing a topic, researching, drafting, revising, and editing. Students will have opportunities to work with partners to talk about their ideas, share their writing, and revise their work.

Crafting complete sentences is an important skill first graders learn this year. It is important for our writers to use capital letters at the beginning of their sentences and punctuation. Writing should be able to convey ideas, therefore it is important for writers to be clear and neat. We encourage our writers to form their letters correctly and use adequate spacing between their words.

Spelling is a minor component of writing. First graders learn new words every day. It would be difficult for them to learn how to spell all these new words. Therefore, the most important words for writers to spell are their word wall words (also known as sight words). These are words that first graders should be able to read and write by the end of the year.  Be sure to see the list of these words in the Sight Words section on my Class Page.
