First grade homework includes reading for at least ten minutes every night. First graders receive a homework cover page at the beginning of the week along with five (5) high frequency words to practice reading and spelling. In order to help your child become stronger readers, they will have access to the classroom library books each week. These books will be brought home in reading bags at the beginning of the week and should be returned at the end of the week. Students can also check out books from the school library.
Homework routines are important to establish and can help your child to strengthen their organizational skills and build independence. One way you can make homework a consistent routine is by creating space and setting aside time for homework to be done.
