The guiding principles of the New York State Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) for Mathematics are focus, coherence, and rigor. Additionally, the Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels seek to develop in their students. Our K-4 students are guided through these standards by way of the inquiry-based program, Investigations in Number, Data, and Space 3rd Edition, known as Investigations 3. This program provides students with mathematical experiences that allow them to construct their understanding of each standard-based mathematical concept, developing critical thinking and efficient problem-solving skills. In knowing that math knowledge results from opportunities to actively engage in math problems and environments, our instruction creates experiences that support students in their explanation, evaluation, communication, and application of mathematical models.
